P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is that kind of a place where you can experience the joy of adventure by camping, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing. Hoffmaster State Park is situated on southwestern coast of Muskegon and run by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It covers about 1200 acres of land along Lake Michigan, Muskegon County in Michigan. It has a 5 kilometer long beach down the lake, 16 kilometers long hiking trails and two camping grounds. During winter, about 5 kilometer trail is groomed for cross-country skiing. The park is home to around 460 species of plants and around 90 different species of animals, birds, insects and amphibians that can be spotted during different times of the year.

From Muskegon, take south on US-31 to Pontaluna Road. Turn west and follow the road signs to reach the park.
Gerald R. Ford International Airport (about 44 miles away from the city) is the nearest to Muskegon and Muskegon County Airport is the nearest domestic airport (distance – 4 miles). Apart from that, there are several other airports like Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport (distance – 86 miles), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (distance – 120 miles), Gerald R. Hoffmaster State Park History
The park is named after P.J. Hoffmaster, who served as the Superintendent of State Parks (From 1922 to 1934) and Director of the Department of Conservation. He played a great role in creating the Michigan state parks systems. The Visitor Centre of the Park is named after Emma Genevieve Gillette, who worked under Hoffmaster scouting locations for establishment of new parks.

Camping and wildlife viewing are two of the most popular activities in the park. The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center organizes interactive events on the park’s sand dune ecosystem.
Hoffmaster State Park Camping

The Hoffmaster Park offers around 293 camping sites which is a real treat for its visitors. It will be better if you reach there as early as possible and select a suitable site. Wildlife Viewing
Hoffmaster State Park is an excellent place for wildlife viewing. People come here to watch migratory birds like wood thrushes, various species of sparrows and warblers and raptors like hawks and even falcons and eagles. During fall, one can spot 6 – 8 species of warblers. A small stream near the visitor centre is a huge visitor attraction. During summer, northern orioles, scarlet tanagers, indigo buntings, red-eyed vireos and various other species of birds can be seen feeding near the stream.
Colorful butterflies are an added treat for your eyes. From July to early September, various butterfly species like spicebush swallowtail, black swallowtail, tiger swallowtail, monarch and buckeye can be spotted in large numbers, as they visit the native wildflowers nearby. During summers, many interpretive sessions are held at the Visitor Center on animals and plants that can be seen in this park. Daily schedules of these sessions can be taken from the Visitor Center.
Fishing
Fishing is another option for you to keep yourself busy during holidays. Lake Michigan is home to over 100 types of freshwater fish species including Bass, Trout, Perch and Pike. You have to bring the fish bait with you as it is not available in the park. If fishing sitting on the banks of the lake seems boring, then one can take a boat for fishing in deeper waters, serving both fishing and boating purpose. This place is hugely popular as an ice fishing destination. During winter, tourists turn out in large numbers to experience ice fishing.
Beach
The beach of Lake Michigan is another way to spend a lazy day with your family. Fresh and clean water will certainly attract you to take a plunge into it. Most people who come here tend to have a feast in the undisturbed beach.

Hiking
The park has got several hiking trails which can be enjoyed by everyone in the family as the trail distance and terrain covered in not too challenging. Hiking at the Hoffmaster State Park is one of the best ways to explore its surrounding areas at different heights which offer a great view of the park. About 5 km trail is groomed for Cross Country Skiing in winter.
